First half marathon at 55

My name is Brien Ricci from Houghton, Michigan. I am 55 years old, married and the father of 3 boys and I have 2 grandchildren.

I have participated in many sports, (ice hockey, softball, golf, football to name a few ). I was an all-state track & field runner in high school but that all came in sprint races. I hated the thought of running farther than 400 meters at one time,  and I never did.

Then 2 years ago I met some long distance runners at a local gym while participating in a spin class. They run at 5:30am many days a week and I found this very intriguing. I started very slowly with run/walks of a mile or two and after a few months I was running 3 miles at a time and entered some 5K races. My first race was in Appleton, Wis. at the Freaky 5K.  I was so nervous I could hardly get out of the bathroom to start the race. The distance of 3.1 miles frightened me and I was worried sick about having to go during the race. I almost threw up at the finish line and did not feel good for 2 days after the race.

I have run (6) 5K’s to date and my time has improved from 29 1/2 minutes to 25 1/2 minutes. This makes me want to run more races. I just love to improve!

Now I have decided that the Cellcom Green Bay will be my first 1/2 marathon. To date I have never ran more that 8 miles during a training session. Being from Houghton, MI is not helping my training. This year the temperatures have been below zero almost every morning. I have been running but not putting in the miles that I should be. It’s just to cold. I hate running on a treadmill and it hurts my joints much more than running outside so I don’t see that as an option.

I have set a lofty goal of 2 hours for the 1/2 marathon and I am very excited to run in Green Bay. I am a big football fan so the special treat of running through both football stadiums is also a treat. I have not run in races with this many runners and that is very intimidating to me, but I will overcome!
